Peak Climbing

Mountaineering/Peak Climbing: Nepal is known as the land of Himalayas–snow capped mountains, east to west about 800 KM across with eight peaks above 8000 meter including the World’s highest; Mt. Everest also known as Sagarmatha or the Third Pole. Government of Nepal has opened 326 peaks for mountaineering (peak climbing) activities among the myriad of snow covered mountains within its territory. Since the country was opened to international mountaineers in 1949, Himalayas has become the center of ecstasy for mountain climbing activities, provided thrust to more people to visit the ultimate mountain. 8 highest peaks in Nepal:

Mt. Everest 8848 M climbed first time on May 29, 1953,
Mt. Kanchanjunga 8586 M climbed first time on 25, 1955,
Mt. Lhotse 8516 M, climbed first time on May 18, 1956,
Mt. Makalu 8463 M climbed first time on May 15, 1955,
Mt. Cho Oyu 8201 M climbed first time on February 12, 1984,

Mt. Manaslu 8163 M climbed first time on May 9, 1956,
Mt. Annapurna 8091 M climbed first time on June 03, 1950,

Out of the 326 peaks opened for mountaineering, 27 peaks’ climbing permits are granted by the 1978 formed Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA). Therefore these peaks are called “NMA Peaks”. These peaks are lesser in heights and technical level and have presented with beautiful trekking trail before and after the summit of the peaks. It is a reason why these peaks are also termed “Trekking Peaks”. There are Group A and Group B trekking peaks. Island Peak, Lobuche Peak, Mera Peak, Pisang Peak, Chulu West/East/Far East Peak, Nayakhang Peak, Tent Peak, Pharchemoche Peak etc. are Trekking Peaks.
Of the other peaks including the 8000 M ones whose budgetary size is quite large as well as considered highly prestigious, Mountaineering (Climbing) Permits are issued by the Department of Tourism, Mountaineering Section under Ministry of Tourism and Aviation, Nepal. Any climbing permits issued by the Mountaineering Section, Tourism Department are mandatory of Liaison Officer, appointed by government of Nepal.

Mt. Everest, Mt. Kanchanjunga, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Makalu… all of 8000 M peak as well as all the other like Mt. Amadablam, Mt. Thamserku, Mt. Pumori, Mt. Baruntse, Mt. Tukuche, Mt. Langtang Lirung, etc. mountaineering or climbing permits are issued by this office.
