Kathmandu to Lhasa Tour – Himalayan Journey to Tibet
Embark on an extraordinary journey from Kathmandu to Lhasa, traveling deep into the legendary landscapes of the Tibetan Plateau and discovering the spiritual and cultural heart of the “Roof of the World.” This 12-day adventure combines scenic drives, cultural exploration, photography and unforgettable Himalayan vistas, culminating at Mount Everest Base Camp on the north face from the Tibet side. From the historic streets and sacred monasteries of Lhasa to the vast high-altitude grasslands and dramatic Himalayan passes, every day offers a new perspective on Tibet’s remarkable landscape, history, and way of life.
The journey takes you into the fascinating world of Tibetan Buddhism and traditional culture, with time to explore some of Lhasa’s most extraordinary landmarks, including the magnificent Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Market, Drepung Monastery and Sera Monastery. Although Lhasa has developed into a modern city, its ancient spiritual character remains deeply woven into everyday life. Prayer flags flutter in the mountain air, pilgrims circle sacred sites, monasteries preserve centuries-old traditions, and the distinctive architecture of Tibet tells stories of a remarkable civilization shaped by faith, history, and the immense Himalayan environment.
Beyond Lhasa, the journey becomes an unforgettable high-altitude road adventure. Crossing spectacular mountain passes such as Gyatchu La (5220 m) and Caro La (5010 m), you travel through immense valleys, open grasslands, remote settlements, and landscapes where the horizon seems to stretch endlessly. The route eventually brings you toward the legendary Everest region, where the world's highest mountain rises dramatically above the Tibetan Plateau. Reaching Everest Base Camp on the north side, you have the opportunity to experience one of the world's most iconic mountain landscapes from a perspective few places can match.
The journey is primarily a comfortable sightseeing and exploration adventure by vehicle, moving from one spectacular viewpoint and cultural landmark to another, with overnight stays in carefully selected hotels and accommodations. There is ample time to stop, explore, appreciate the scenery, and capture photographs. An experienced guide accompanies the journey and provides detailed insight into Tibet’s culture, religion, history, landscapes, and local traditions, allowing you to understand far more than what can be seen through a vehicle window.
The journey begins with the Kathmandu–Tibet border crossing at Rasuwagadhi–Kerung [or as the Nepal - China governments decide], one of the principal land gateways between Nepal and Tibet for international travelers. From the Nepalese side to Chinese immigration and onward into Tibet, the transition itself becomes part of the adventure as the landscape changes dramatically from the green valleys of Nepal to the vast, high-altitude world of the Tibetan Plateau.
Our standard itinerary follows a drive-in and fly-out arrangement, allowing you to experience the spectacular overland landscapes on the way into Tibet before returning by air from Lhasa. However, the direction can be adjusted to fly-in and drive-out according to your travel plans and requirements. Whether you are drawn by Tibetan Buddhism, Himalayan photography, the legendary city of Lhasa, or the opportunity to stand beneath the north face of Mount Everest, this journey offers an immersive and memorable introduction to one of the world's most extraordinary destinations.
