Overview

Explore Kathmandu Valley’s sacred temples, ancient stupas and vibrant living culture, visiting historic cities and UNESCO heritage sites that reveal Nepal’s timeless spirit and traditions.

Kathmandu Valley city tours are among the best ways to discover the valley, its people, culture and remarkable history. Beyond the busy streets of modern Kathmandu lies a fascinating world of ancient cities, temples, courtyards, sacred sites and living traditions that have shaped Nepal for centuries.

There are many places worth exploring and we have listed 10 major cultural and historical sites on our schedule (itinerary) column below. Each has its own story, architecture, traditions and connection to the glorious past of the Kathmandu Valley. We recommend taking your time rather than trying to see everything in a single day.

A one-day sightseeing tour normally covers 3–4 places in around 6–8 hours, while a half-day tour generally includes 1–2 places in 3–4 hours. Depending on your interests and available time, Kathmandu sightseeing can be tailored from one day to two days, or extended to three or four days for a more in-depth experience.

At Alpine Exodus, our city tour guides bring years of field experience and a deep understanding of Kathmandu Valley's history, culture, religion and everyday life. Guides speaking your preferred language can also be arranged upon request.

We provide comfortable, well-maintained Toyota vehicles with fully functioning air conditioning, making sightseeing convenient even when Kathmandu's streets are busy. If your time is limited, you do not need to visit every site. Tell us what interests you most and we will tailor an itinerary around the major places that best represent the heritage and living culture of Kathmandu Valley.

Itinerary

Welcome to Kathmandu, the historic capital of Nepal and the gateway to the Himalayas.

Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, our representative will meet you outside the arrival terminal and welcome you to Nepal. After a short introduction, you will be transferred by private vehicle to your hotel in Thame, which is 4km and sometime takes 25-30min. The drive to the hotel gives you your first glimpse of the lively streets, traditional architecture, local markets and everyday life of the Kathmandu Valley.

Once you're at the hotel, you will check in and have time to settle into your room and rest after your journey. Depending on your arrival time and energy level, there may be an opportunity for a short walk around the nearby area or a brief visit to a local attraction. We keep the first day flexible because international flights can arrive at different times and guests may prefer to rest after a long journey.

In the evening, we can arrange a traditional Nepali welcome dinner if the timing is suitable. This is a relaxed opportunity to meet your guide or our team, enjoy authentic Nepali cuisine and receive a brief introduction to your upcoming tour. If your arrival is late, the welcome dinner can instead be arranged on another suitable evening.

Overnight: Hotel in Kathmandu
