Shivapuri–Bagdwar Day Hike from Kathmandu through lush forests, sacred Bagdwar and scenic trails to Himalayan views of Langtang, Ganesh Himal, Rolwaling and the Kathmandu Valley.
Shivapuri–Bagdwar Day Hike
The Shivapuri–Bagdwar Day Hike is a wonderful way to escape the busy streets of Kathmandu and spend a day surrounded by nature. Located within Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, the trail takes you through peaceful forests, refreshing streams and beautiful mountain landscapes, all just a short distance from the capital.
This one-day adventure is ideal for travelers who want to experience the natural beauty of Nepal without committing to a long trek. The trail reaches an altitude of approximately 2732 meters (10403 feet) and offers a rewarding combination of forest scenery, fresh mountain air, cultural sites and panoramic views.
Trip Information
The Shivapuri–Bagdwar Hike is a one-day adventure and nature hike in the Shivapuri area of Kathmandu, Nepal. The hike is suitable for any number in the groups and for almost all of the age groups as well as all kinds of fitness. The best seasons for this hike are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when the weather is generally pleasant and the mountain views are clearer.
Shivapuri–Bagdwar Hiking Experience
The hike usually begins from the Budhanilkantha area, home to the famous Budhanilkantha Temple and its remarkable reclining statue of Lord Vishnu. From here, the trail gradually enters the peaceful forests of Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, leaving the noise and activity of Kathmandu behind.
As you walk deeper into the forest, the trail passes through a rich mix of rhododendron, oak and pine trees. Depending on the season and your luck, you may encounter monkeys, deer, wild boars and a variety of native birds. The park is also known for larger wildlife, including leopards, although sightings are not that common.
The trail continues through the forest toward Bagdwar, an important natural and cultural landmark associated with the source of the Bagmati River. The peaceful surroundings, flowing water and forested landscape make Bagdwar a refreshing place to pause and enjoy the natural environment.
For hikers continuing toward Shivapuri Peak, the trail becomes more demanding as it climbs higher. The effort is rewarded with beautiful views across the Kathmandu Valley and, on clear days, distant Himalayan ranges and peaks, including views toward Langtang, Ganesh Himal and the Rolwaling region.
The Shivapuri area is particularly attractive because of its contrast: within a relatively short journey from the urban center of Kathmandu, you can find quiet forests, mountain trails, wildlife and expansive Himalayan scenery.
Nature, Culture and Mountain Views
One of the highlights of the Shivapuri–Bagdwar Day Hike is the combination of nature and culture. The journey begins close to one of Kathmandu's important Hindu pilgrimage sites before entering a protected natural landscape.
The forest provides a cool and peaceful hiking environment, while the higher sections of the trail open up to wider views of the valley and surrounding mountains. During spring, rhododendrons add seasonal color to the forest, while autumn often brings clearer skies and better visibility.
Best Time for the Shivapuri–Bagdwar Hike
The best seasons for the Shivapuri–Bagdwar Day Hike are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These months generally offer comfortable hiking conditions, pleasant temperatures and clearer mountain views.
The hike can also be undertaken at other times of the year, but weather conditions can change quickly. During the monsoon season, trails may become wet and slippery, while clouds and rain can reduce visibility.
Hiking Preparation
Although the Shivapuri–Bagdwar trail is accessible as a day hike, it involves steady uphill walking, so a reasonable level of fitness is helpful. Wear comfortable hiking shoes with good grip and carry sufficient drinking water and some snacks.
Mountain weather can change quickly, so dressing in layers is recommended. A light rain jacket can also be useful, particularly outside the main dry seasons.
A local guide can be helpful for travelers unfamiliar with the trails and surrounding area. Hikers should also follow the rules of Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, respect local culture and religious sites, and avoid leaving any waste along the trail.
A Refreshing Escape from Kathmandu
The Shivapuri–Bagdwar Day Hike offers an easy opportunity to experience the quieter side of Nepal while staying close to Kathmandu. From the cultural atmosphere of Budhanilkantha to the peaceful forests of Shivapuri and the natural beauty of Bagdwar, the hike combines nature, culture and Himalayan scenery in a single day.
For travelers with limited time in Nepal, it is an excellent way to step away from the city, breathe fresh mountain air and experience the forests and landscapes surrounding the Kathmandu Valley.
Itinerary
The day begins with a short drive of approximately 9 km north of Kathmandu to Budhanilkantha, home to one of Nepal’s most remarkable religious sites. Here, you can see a magnificent 5-meter-long stone image of Lord Vishnu, believed to date back to the 6th–7th century. The statue lies peacefully on a large coiled serpent with multiple heads and rests in a water-filled pond. We stop for around 10 minutes to visit the shrine and explore the surroundings before continuing our drive.
From Budhanilkantha, we drive for another 15 minutes to the Army Gate, the starting point of our hike into Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park. Shivapuri is one of the highest hills surrounding the Kathmandu Valley and offers a peaceful escape into nature.
The hike initially follows an unfinished road for approximately 30 minutes through the forest before joining the main trekking trail. From here, the trail gradually climbs through beautiful forests toward the summit. The ascent generally takes around 3–4 hours, depending on the walking pace and trail conditions.
Reaching the top is a rewarding experience, with impressive views across the Kathmandu Valley and, on clear days, panoramic views of the Annapurna Range, Ganesh Himal, Langtang and Rolwaling ranges. We take a break at the summit to enjoy the scenery and have our packed lunch surrounded by Himalayan views.
After spending time at the top, we descend through the forest and return to Budhanilkantha, where our vehicle will be waiting to drive you back to your hotel in Kathmandu.
The complete experience takes approximately 6–7 hours, including the driving, hiking and time spent enjoying the surroundings. The minimum group size is 2 people.
