Overview
A challenging path trek through the remote Rolwaling Valley to Nepal's largest glacial lake at 4580m.This route demands physical fitness & offers an authentic Sherpa cultural experience.
The Tsho Rolpa Trek is a wonderfully rewarding adventure into the remote Rolwaling Valley, culminating at Nepal's largest glacial lake. It is an excellent choice for trekkers with a reasonable level of fitness who are seeking a genuine Himalayan experience away from the crowded trails of Everest and Annapurna. This journey offers steady, achievable walking days through stunning landscapes and traditional villages, making it ideal for those who want to immerse themselves in the quiet rhythm of the mountains.
Tsho Rolpa sits at an elevation of 4580 meters (15030 ft) and is a spectacle of immense scale, roughly 3 kilometers long and up to 130 meters deep. The lake was formed by the retreating Trakarding Glacier and is now one of Nepal's most closely monitored glacial lakes due to its size. Reaching its shores offers not only breathtaking views of the turquoise water reflecting the surrounding peaks but also a tangible connection to the powerful forces shaping the Himalayas.
The route takes you through the Rolwaling Valley, a region recognized in Tibetan Buddhist tradition as a beyul-a sacred hidden land. You will pass through traditional Sherpa villages like Simigaon, Dongang, and Beding, gaining insight into a culture more closely tied to Tibet. The trail is well-defined and sees far fewer trekkers than the main routes, offering a sense of solitude and discovery. The journey is also a cultural one; after the village of Kyalche, the region becomes a "no-kill zone," meaning only vegetarian food is available-a reflection of the deep respect for nature held by the local community.
The terrain involves steep ascents and rugged trails, but it does not require technical climbing skills or previous mountaineering experience. This trek is ideal for beginners with a good level of physical fitness. Daily walking hours typically range from 4 to 6 hours, allowing your body to slowly acclimatize to the increasing altitude. The key to enjoying this trek is a steady pace, proper preparation and the guidance of an experienced local guide provided by Alpine Exodus.
The highest point of the standard trek is Tsho Rolpa Lake at 4580 m. and if continue of the same trail to the east that joins to the Everest Region through the Tashi Lptcha (5755m) Pass; a technical and difficult route that connects the Rolwaling Valley; entering Thame - Thamo then to Namche. The Tashi Lapcha Pass is not part of a standard Tsho Rolpa trek and requires climbing equipment and experience. You will require a permit: a Gaurishankar Conservation Area Permit (GCAP). The Rolwaling Valley is a restricted area and a licensed guide is mandatory for the foreign visitors.
The optimal times to trek are Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November). These periods offer stable weather, clear mountain views and moderate temperatures. The trail is a remote mountain route and like many in Nepal, can be affected by seasonal weather. A local experienced guide is essential to navigate such conditions safely.
Accommodation is in local teahouses and lodges along the route. In the higher villages of Beding and Na, facilities are simple and meals are typically limited to vegetarian options.
Itinerary
Drive from Kathmandu to Chhetchhet (1398m) and Trek to Simigaon (2020m)
Your Tsho Rolpa adventure begins with an early morning drive from Kathmandu, heading east towards the Dolakha district. The journey is a long but scenic 7-8 hour private jeep drive, covering approximately 195 kilometers along the Araniko Highway and then following the Tamakoshi River. You will pass through towns like Dolalghat, Mudhe, and Charikot before reaching the roadhead at Chhetchhet.
Upon arrival at Chhetchhet, you will begin your trek. The trail immediately crosses a suspension bridge over the thundering Tamakoshi River and then ascends steeply through terraced fields and forest. After approximately 2 to 3 hours of steady climbing, you will arrive at the Sherpa village of Simigaon. Perched on a ridge, Simigaon offers your first views of the Gaurishankar mountain range and provides a peaceful introduction to the Rolwaling Valley. Overnight at a local lodge.
Ensure the guide checks current road conditions to Chhetchhet, as monsoon landslides can cause delays. If the drive is severely delayed, an overnight in Charikot may be necessary, requiring itinerary adjustments. The 7-8 hour drive is a separate, non-trekking segment.
