Overview

A short, easy Himalayan escape with amazing snow-mountain views & spectacular rhododendron flowers in spring. Sunrise at Poon Hill offers true Himalayan beauty & untold peace with every hike!

This trek is an excellent choice for beginners and first-time trekkers who want to experience the spectacular Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Himalayas without undertaking a long or demanding journey. In just a few days, you can explore the heavenly landscapes of the Annapurna Conservation Area, renowned for its world-class trekking trails, enchanting mountain vistas, rich biodiversity and remarkable variety of flora and fauna, including several endangered species.

Ghorepani, Poon Hill and Tadapani are among the most popular viewpoints and highlights of this short and relatively easy trekking route. The trek can be tailored to suit your available time, fitness level and preferred trail length. Tikhedhunga, Ulleri or Banthanti can be used as starting points, while the trek can end at Ghandruk (Ghandrung), about three hours’ walk from Tadapani. Alternatively, you can descend via Kimrong to Jhinu Danda and continue by road to Pokhara. These options make the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek remarkably flexible, allowing you to choose a shorter or longer version according to your itinerary.

Despite being a short trek, the route offers an impressive Himalayan experience. From Poon Hill, early-morning views stretch across the magnificent Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, while the spring season brings spectacular displays of blooming rhododendrons along the trail. For international visitors looking for an easy introduction to trekking in Nepal, it is difficult to find a better combination of accessibility, scenery, culture, and natural beauty.

Permits and Entry

Trekkers entering the Annapurna Conservation Area still need an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), which can be obtained in Kathmandu or Pokhara. The permit is checked at Birethanti, shortly after crossing the motorable bridge over the Modi Khola.

The Modi Khola (Khola meaning river in Nepali) flows down from the Annapurna Sanctuary area after gathering water from the Annapurna Base Camp, Machhapuchhre Base Camp and surrounding glaciers. During the dry season, the glacial water can appear whitish or milky, giving the river its distinctive character. The river also supports small hydropower projects in the lower valleys, while rafting and kayaking can be arranged in suitable sections upon request.

A TIMS (Trekkers’ Information Management Systems) card is not currently mandatory for this trek under the applicable arrangements, although trekking permit requirements can change. We recommend checking the latest requirements with Alpine Exodus before departure.
