Overview
Upper Dolpo Trek, part of the GHT begins at Juphal & leading through Dho -Tarap valleys; then experiencing further remote Himalayan part of the world to Saldang & Shey before return to Juphal
The Upper Dolpo Trek is an extraordinary opportunity to experience centuries-old culture, traditions and breathtaking natural beauty preserved in one of Nepal’s most remote Himalayan regions. This remarkable journey passes through the Shey Phoksundo National Park in Dolpo District, offering an immersive exploration of pristine landscapes, dramatic mountain scenery and a unique environment that has remained remarkably untouched. Located in the remote hills of western Nepal near the Tibetan border, Dolpo has preserved its traditional Buddhist culture, ancient religious practices and distinctive Himalayan way of life through generations. Unlike many regions that have experienced rapid modernization, Upper Dolpo continues to retain much of its traditional character, making it an exceptional destination for travelers seeking an authentic Himalayan cultural experience. This is one of the many reasons why we invite you to discover Dolpo while its unique heritage and traditional lifestyle remain beautifully preserved.
The journey begins in the Lower Dolpo region, following a scenic flight from Nepalgunj to Juphal, before gradually leading trekkers into the remote Upper Dolpo area. Here, the rewards of challenging trekking become truly apparent. The route takes you through ancient and colorful Buddhist monasteries, sparsely scattered Himalayan villages and communities that have preserved their distinctive traditions for centuries. Carefully planned camping stages and adventurous trekking trails lead across remote valleys and high mountain passes in Dolpo, Nepal, creating an authentic wilderness experience far from the busy trekking routes of the Himalayas.
The Upper Dolpo Trek is also a remarkable opportunity to understand the culture, traditions and everyday challenges faced by the Himalayan communities living in this remote region. Along the route, numerous small settlements provide glimpses into a simple yet resilient way of life. Among the most important destinations are Dho, Tarap, Shey Gompa and Saldang, culturally significant villages that showcase the spiritual and traditional heritage of Dolpo. The itinerary also includes challenging high passes that test your endurance while rewarding you with spectacular views of the surrounding Himalayan wilderness. With its alpine atmosphere, barren mountains, high-altitude valleys, ancient monasteries and untouched landscapes, Upper Dolpo offers an exceptional trekking experience for adventurous travelers seeking to explore the hidden kingdom of Nepal.
