Shivapuri is a popular hiking destination located in the Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, which is situated in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal. This national park is famous for its lush forests, diverse wildlife, and the picturesque views it offers of the Himalayan mountain range.

There are several trails within the national park, but the most common hike starts from Budhanilkantha, a famous temple known for its large sleeping Vishnu statue. From here, you can hike through dense forests, cross streams and ascend to the Shivapuri peak. The trail is moderately challenging and takes around 4-6 hours to complete, depending on your pace.

As you ascend, you’ll be rewarded with beautiful views of the Kathmandu Valley, lush greenery and on clear days, panoramic vistas of the Himalayas, including Langtang, Ganesh Himal, Rolwaling and even peaks of the Everest region.

The national park is home to a variety of wildlife, including monkeys, deer, boars, leopards and numerous bird species. You’ll also pass through dense forests of rhododendron, oak and pine trees.

The hike typically culminates at the Shivapuri Peak, which stands at an elevation of around 2732m/8963ft. From the peak, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

While it’s possible to do the Shivapuri Hike independently, hiring a local guide is recommended, especially if you’re not familiar with the area. Additionally, you may need to obtain an entry permit to enter Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, which can usually be obtained at the park’s entrance.

The best time for the Shivapuri Hike is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) when the weather is pleasant, and the skies are clear.

Make sure to wear appropriate hiking gear, carry enough water, and pack some snacks. The weather can be unpredictable, so it’s advisable to dress in layers and be prepared for changing conditions.

Remember to respect the environment and the local culture while hiking in Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park. Leave no trace, and take your trash with you. It will take you to Budhanilkantha (9Km. north). Here a 5 meter long a stone image (built 6th-7th centaury) of Vishnu lies serenely in the pond bedding on a most unusual coil of the multi-headed snake. We stop for 10 minutes to visit this shrine area and continue drive for another 15 minutes to the Army gate. This is the entry of the hike to Shivapuri hill. This hill is one of the highest hills around the Kathmandu Valley. We walk about 30 min along the unfinished road through the park forests and then taking the trek trail head to the top. It’s a walk of 3-4 hrs. The top is experienced with an excellent view of Kathmandu Valley, views of the Annapurna Range, Ganesh Himal, Langtang, Rolwaling. Take your pack lunch here while having the views of Himalayan peaks. Going back down to Budhanilkantha – to drive to your hotel is totally of 6-7 hours trip. Minimum group size is 2 people.
